The Blubber Experiment P2/3
As part of our Arctic Adventures topic we have been discussing how Arctic animals survive in the cold icy climate. In our science investigation this week we have tested the insulating effects of blubber in keeping out the cold. We put our hands in an icy bowl to see how cold the water was. We then covered our hand with a glove and lard which replicated the blubber. We put our hand into the ice again and timed how long we could keep our hand in before it got too cold.
We calculated a difference of 19 seconds with a bare hand compared to 5 minutes with the lard covered hand. This proved how essential the blubber is for Arctic animals. This investigation was great fun.
