Picnic at Ross Monument for P6/P7

21st Jun 2024

Thanks to Dr. John Mc Cavitt, the P6 and P7 class enjoyed a heritage walk around Rostrevor today.  He pointed out many interesting buildings and told us all about their history on the way.   Our final destination was the Ross Monument where we learned that it was built in 1826, in memory of Major General Robert Ross.  Major General Ross was born in Rostrevor in 1766 and went on to become a distinguished military leader, serving in the Napoleonic Wars and the War of 1812, where he played a major role in the burning of Washington D.C. in 1814.

We all enjoyed a picnic at the Monument before returning to school.   A huge thanks to Dr. John Mc Cavitt for sharing this fascinating historical information with us.
