Dept of Education RSE Consultation
Dear Principal
I attach a letter from Andrena Murray, Head of Curriculum Team, in relation to the Relationships and Sexuality Education consultation which has launched today on the circumstances and arrangements which would enable a parent/carer to excuse their child from receiving age-appropriate, comprehensive and scientifically accurate education on sexual and reproductive health and rights, covering prevention of early pregnancy and access to abortion.
Your response can be made:
- Online at Citizen Space at https://consultations.nidirect.gov.uk/de/rse-consultation, or
- Using the QR Code below.
The Consultation Booklet is also available to download from Consultations | Department of Education (education-ni.gov.uk) and can be emailed directly to the Department at rseresponses@education-ni.gov.uk or posted to

It would be helpful if the consultation could be brought to the attention of your pupils either directly or through your School Council. You may want to make parents/carers aware as well through, for example, SIMS or via your website. The Department will be issuing a tweet to follow the launch of the consultation. It would be helpful if you could re-tweet, if possible.
Although the changes made by the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland relate to Key Stages 3 and 4 only, the Department appreciates that Relationships and Sexuality Education follows a progression across all Key Stages. We therefore welcome responses from both primary schools and primary school age pupils.
I also attach correspondence that was issued from Ray Caldwell on 7 August in relation to the false information campaign on the changes to RSE.
Kind Regards,
Curriculum Team
